TOPIK

The official Korean language proficiency test. Required for university admission, job applications, and visas in South Korea — taught by an instructor living in Korea.

What is TOPIK?

TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) is the official Korean language proficiency exam administered by the Korean government. It is recognised by universities, employers, and immigration authorities across South Korea and worldwide. There are two levels: TOPIK I (Levels 1–2, beginner) and TOPIK II (Levels 3–6, intermediate to advanced). The test measures your ability to read and listen in Korean — and at higher levels, your writing ability too.

Who Needs TOPIK?

International students applying to Korean universities (most require TOPIK Level 3+)
Foreign workers applying for an E-7 skilled worker visa or F-series residency visa
People applying for permanent residency (F-5) or Korean citizenship (F-6)
Job applicants at Korean companies that require Korean language ability
Anyone living in Korea who wants to prove their Korean level officially

Exam Structure

I

TOPIK I — Levels 1 & 2 (Beginner)

2 sections: Listening (30 questions, 40 min) and Reading (40 questions, 60 min). Multiple choice only. No writing section.

II

TOPIK II — Levels 3 & 4 (Intermediate)

3 sections: Listening (50 questions, 60 min), Writing (4 questions, 50 min), Reading (50 questions, 70 min).

TOPIK II — Levels 5 & 6 (Advanced)

Same format as Levels 3–4 but with significantly harder content, academic vocabulary, and complex writing tasks.

Scoring & Results

TOPIK I scores range from 0–200. Level 1 requires 80+, Level 2 requires 140+. TOPIK II scores range from 0–300. Level 3 requires 120+, Level 4 requires 150+, Level 5 requires 190+, Level 6 requires 230+. The exam is held 6 times per year in Korea and internationally. Results are issued approximately 4 weeks after the test.

Quick Tips from the Instructor

  • 01For TOPIK I, focus on everyday vocabulary and basic grammar patterns — the topics are predictable.
  • 02Listening is played only once — train yourself to take notes while listening, not after.
  • 03Reading questions in TOPIK II often test your understanding of the main idea, not just details.
  • 04The Writing section (TOPIK II) is where most students lose marks — practice 작문 (composition) daily.
  • 05Learn Korean through Korean: news, dramas, and conversations beat textbooks at higher levels.
